ABOUT KATHLEEN KRULL
Krull writes both nonfiction and fiction books. I have only listed her nonfiction titles. Before beginning her "real"
career as a writer she collaborated with other writers for a series of nonfiction concept books for young readers. These
books were written in the late seventies and early eighties. She does not make a point of mentioning them in her bibliography
of books she has written.
Her "real" career took off when she began writing a series of collective biographies. The "Lives Of"
series (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, and 2000) focused on musicians, writers, artists, athletes, presidents, and women. The "Lives
Of" series has been completed, however. This series is interesting for several reasons. One of which is that Krull's
inspiration for these books came from seeing the illustrator's artwork. Kathryn Hewitt, the illustator, specialized in caricature
sketches of famous figures. After seeing some of her work, she decided to work with Hewitt and write biographies to go along
with Hewitt's art.
Krull's talent is providing rich details in a kid-friendly layout. Her goal is not to provide her reader with everything
there is to know on a subject but to show how "history" can be fun and relevant by showing kids and young adults
that these "historical figures" were regular everyday people.
