How does the list, Librarians Choices 2004, compare with other "best" lists of the year?

NEWBERY AWARD WINNER AND HONOR BOOKS

The Librarians Choices 2004 include the Newbery award winner KIRA-KIRA and two of the three Newbery Honor books (THE VOICE THAT CHALLENGED A NATION and LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY).

CALDECOTT AWARD WINNER AND HONOR BOOKS

The Librarians Choices 2004 list includes the Caldecott award winner KITTEN'S FIRST FULL MOON and one of the three Caldecott Honor books KNUFFLE BUNNY.

MICHAEL L. PRINTZ AWARD AND HONOR BOOKS

The Librarians Choices 2004 include the Printz award winner HOW I LIVE NOW and one of the three Printz Honor books LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY.

ROBERT F. SIBERT AWARD AND HONOR BOOKS

The Librarians Choices 2004 list includes the Sibert Award winner THE VOICE THAT CHALLENGED A NATION and one of the three Sibert Honor books THE TARANTULA SCIENTIST.

NCTE ORBIS PICTUS AWARD WINNER AND HONOR BOOKS

The Librarians Choices 2004 list did not include the award winner (YORK'S ADVENTURE'S WITH LEWIS AND CLARK); however, it did include three of the five Orbis Pictus Honor books: ACTUAL SIZE, SECRETS OF THE SPHINX, and THE VOICE THAT CHALLENGED A NATION.

MILDRED L. BATCHELDER AWARD AND HONOR BOOKS

Although our list did not include the Batchelder Award winner, the Librarians Choices 2004 list did include one of the two Batchelder Honor books THE CROW GIRL.

CHARLOTTE ZOLOTOW AWARD AND HONOR BOOKS

Librarians Choices 2004 includes the Zolotow Award Winner KITTEN'S FIRST FULL MOON and two of the three Zolotow Honor books POLAR BEAR NIGHT and KNUFFLE BUNNY.

TOP TEN BEST BOOKS FOR YOUNG ADULTS

Librarians Choices 2004 includes three of YALSA's Top Ten BBYA selections: BUCKING THE SARGE, SAVING FRANCESCA, and SO B. IT.

The complete listing of BBYA includes eighty-six titles. The Librarians Choices 2004 list includes eighteen of the eighty-six.

YOUNGER READERS (22 BOOKS)

The Librarians Choices 2004 include seven of the twenty-two books recommended for younger readers: THE NEIGHBORHOOD MOTHER GOOSE, SIDEWALK CIRCUS, KITTEN'S FIRST FULL MOON, IF NOT FOR THE CAT, WILD ABOUT BOOKS, POLAR BEAR NIGHT, and KNUFFLE BUNNY.

MIDDLE READERS (27 BOOKS)

The Librarians Choices 2004 include six of the twenty-seven titles recommended for middle readers: THE CROW GIRL, TECHNICALLY, IT'S NOT MY FAULT, THE CATS IN KRASINSKI SQUARE, FISH, THE TARANTULA SCIENTIST, and THE TRAIN OF STATES.

OLDER READERS (28 BOOKS)

The Librarians Choices 2004 list includes eight of the twenty-eight books recommended for older readers: SO B. IT, LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY, BECOMING NAOMI LEON, HERE IN HARLEM, KIRA-KIRA, THE VOICE THAT CHALLENGED A NATION, SEA OF TROLLS, and BUCKING THE SARGE.

INTERNATIONAL READING ASSOCIATION

The International Reading Association has three awards: Teachers' Choices, Childrens' Choices, and Young Adults' Choices.

TEACHERS' CHOICES

Librarians Choices 2004 has five book matches with Teachers' Choices: HACHIKO: THE TRUE STORY OF A LOYAL DOG, IDA B., JIM THORPE'S BRIGHT PATH, THE VOICE THAT CHALLENGED A NATION: MARIAN ANDERSON AND THE STRUGGLE FOR EQUAL RIGHTS, and WAKE UP OUR SOULS: A CELEBRATION OF BLACK AMERICAN ARTISTS.

CHILDREN'S CHOICES

Our list had eight titles in common with Children's Choices: ACTUAL SIZE, BOOM CHICKA ROCK, HOW TO CATCH A STAR, I AM TOO ABSOLUTELY SMALL FOR SCHOOL, KNUFFLE BUNNY, MISTER SEAHORSE, DUCK FOR PRESIDENT, and SOMETHING TO TELL THE GRANDCOWS.

VOYA 2005 NONFICTION HONOR LIST

LIBRARIANS' CHOICES 2004 includes seven of the nonfiction titles honored by the journal VOYA. These include: WAKE UP OUR SOULS, THE VOICE THAT CHALLENGED A NATION, WONDERS AND MIRACLES: A PASSOVER COMPANION, HIROSHIMA: THE STORY OF THE FIRST ATOM BOMB, THE TARANTULA SCIENTIST, HERE IN HARLEM, and PROMISES TO KEEP: HOW JACKIE ROBINSON CHANGED AMERICA.

HORNBOOK FANFARE; BEST OF 2004

Nineteen books appeared on the Hornbook Fanfare "Best of 2004" list. Of those nineteen, six appeared on Librarians Choices 2004: KNUFFLE BUNNY, SEA OF TROLLS, THE YEAR OF SECRET ASSIGNMENTS, IF NOT FOR THE CAT, HOW I LIVE NOW, and THE VOICE THAT CHALLENGED A NATION.
